🎀 Yonsei Application Documents

- Yonsei's application was completely online, so it was relatively easy to do!

- Make sure the documents are jpg or pdf files, with the exception of the Study Plan, which can be a pdf or Word doc.

Official E-transcript
- Order one here
- Send it to yourself and it will be processed on the same day.

ID Photo
- 4.5 cm x 3.5 cm
- Follow the requirements provided - neutral expression, ears showing, white background, proper cropping, etc.

Copy of Passport
- The passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the beginning of the semester.

Proof of Funding
- Under the student’s name, otherwise if it's under a parent’s name, a document must be attached to verify the relationship (i.e. birth certificate)
- The balance must be at least 4,000 USD for one-semester exchange or 10,000 USD for one-year exchange
- Document must be issued within 30 days from the date of application submission.

Health Insurance
- You may skip this for now and submit later. The deadline was January 15 for spring admission and July 15 for fall admission.
- You can submit your own health insurance document, otherwise, MIX will provide an insurance document for the study abroad insurance that you can submit.
  - If there are any issues regarding receiving this, you can email Yonsei in advance and they will allow you to submit it past the deadline.

Study Plan
- A Word document will be provided with four short answer questions about your purpose, major, self-introduction, and educational background.

🌷 Yonsei Dorm Application

- Housing for Korean exchange students is typically either the dorm, goshiwon, or other off-campus options.

- Personally, I decided to live in the dorms because I never had that experience back at my home campus.

Yonsei offers 2 dorms for exchange students:
- SK Global House
- International House.

- I decided to go with SK Global House, mainly for the private bathroom.

Yonsei's dorm applications are done on a first-come, first-served basis
I've heard dorms are extremely competitive to get into, however, I personally had a smooth application process.

Dorm Application

Find the website notice & application guide here
Application site: https://portal.yonsei.ac.kr/
- This portal is different from the one you used to apply to Yonsei, and this will be used throughout the semester, including the dorm process and course registration.

The application consists of:
- Personal information (address, mobile phone, emergency contact)
- 1st and 2nd choice dorm
  - One of the choices has to be SK Global (single or double) and the other choice has to be International House.
    - Ex. You can't choose SK Global double for one choice and SK Global single for another.
- Lifestyle questions (what time you go to bed, level of cleanliness, smoking, sleep habits, etc.)
  - This is most likely used for your roommate if you choose a double room
    - If you have plans to request a specific person, this is not too important.

Dorm Payment

Once your dorm application is accepted, you can now pay. Payment options include:
- Wise
- Flywire (Yonsei will send a payment link)
- Wire transfer through your local bank

I did a wire transfer through Wise because the transaction fees were cheaper than if I were to do it through my bank.
- Add Yonsei University as a recipient as a "business or charity" and fill out their details
  - Specific details will be provided via email and portal.
- The money was transferred in less than an hour! Yonsei will update your 'Confirmation of Payment' document the next day.
- I emailed the tracking link for my transfer from Wise to Yonsei just in case, but this is optional.

Roomate Request

I had a friend who was also attending Yonsei University, so I was able to request them once the application opened (you do not need to rush for this, unlike the dorm application).
All you need is your desired roommate's Yonsei student ID (i.e. SAY*******).
If someone requests you to be their roommate, you can accept or reject them (and they can do so for your request as well).
- You or your desired roommate would need to accept (both of you do not need to). Once one accepts, the other person doesn't need to do it anymore and both of you are all set!

Dorm Application Tips

Remember Yonsei's deadlines are all in KST! Make sure to convert it to your local time zone.
Yonsei will email you housing information and an application guide for their portal, so practice going through it before the application opens.
The portal does not allow you to log in before the application, but I went onto the portal about 1-2 hours before the application opened, and it allowed me to log in and pre-fill some of the information (address, emergency contact, and application questions).
- That way, as soon as it hit 3pm HST, all I had to do was click the apply button!

Required Documents (for check-in)

Tuberculosis test result
- Chest x-ray, skin test, or blood test is acceptable.
- For Fall 2024, the test had to be taken after June 24, 2024.
MMR (measles) immunization record
- Shows a second measles vaccination
- Soft copy is acceptable
- If you don't have this, you can take an MMR antibody test in Korea for about 30,000 KRW.

🌸 Course Registration

- Yonsei will send you an academic guideline, so make sure you read it thoroughly a couple of times.

- Yonsei also created a playlist on the main points of registration, but this is not a replacement for reading the academic guideline.

For Shidler students, take note of what classes you want/need to take by referring to the Partner School Course Equivalencies for your respective school.
- Some courses have restrictions on specific colleges/majors or they may not be eligible for exchange students (even if it's on Shidler's course equivalency sheet), so be wary of your academic planning. In addition to that, some courses may only be offered in the Fall/Spring semester or only in Korean.
- You can also refer to Yonsei's past semesters' course catalogs.

Registration Round 1

Registration Round 1 is VERY DIFFERENT from UHM's registration process.
They operate on a mileage bidding system, where undergraduate students get 72 miles and graduate students get 60 miles. Miles will not carry onto Round 2, so you will need to use them all.
- Course priorities depend on:
  - The more miles you allocate for a course, the higher your chance of getting a spot.
    - Even if you allocate the maximum mileage, you are not guaranteed a spot for extremely competitive courses.
  - Relevance of your Yonsei major to the Department of the course.
    - ex. Business Admin. majors will get higher priority to courses offered by the College of Business.
  - Number of courses applied for
    - Those who applied to more courses will be given higher priority than those who applied to less.
You can apply/cancel/change the amount of miles on your courses until the end of Round 1.
Round 1 is NOT time-based, but I would highly encourage you to complete it ASAP.

Registration Round 2

If you do not end up getting the classes in Round 1, you can attempt again in Round 2.
Unlike Round 1, Round 2 IS time-based and mileage is not used at all. It is done on a first-come, first-served basis, and if you don't get it, you can join the waitlist (very similar to UHM).
You need to frequently check the portal to see whether you got into the course as there is not separate announcement.

Add & Drop Period

Very much like Round 2, during the add & drop period, it is first-come, first-served.
Waiting lists from Round 2 are not carried over, so you would have to re-join waitlists if you need to.
For this period, you would also need to frequently check the portal to see if you got into the course.
For classes that are still full, you would need to join the waitlist during this period.
- For my International Marketing class, I didn't get it during Round 1 and Round 2, but I attended the first class and expressed interest in the course, so I would recommend reaching out to your professor because your interest can help encourage extra seats to be added.
  - I eventually got off the waitlist for this course!
  - To note, for this period, if you believe your waitlist number is good and you are willing to wait for the professor to open more seats, you can do so. On the other hand, you can submit a Course Registration Approval Form that they will send to you; in order to submit this form, you have to be off the waitlist, and a spot is not a guarantee, so it is up to your discretion to decide what you want to do.
